So you want to be a signed professional model? Great! What are your plans to become one? It is usually by this point that I lose every, “Doe Eyed” person with visions of modeling in their heads. Every time I suggest that they get themselves professional shots done... I usually never hear from them again. The fact is, many aspiring models want someone who has already made it, to give it to them! Or better yet, to give away all they’ve learned & earned for free! Needless to say It doesn’t always work that way. If you want to be a successful model, YOU will have to put in the work for it!
For starters, know what type of model you are! Where do you best fit! Everyone of course wants to be The High Fashion Model...Yet everyone does not qualify to be one! What are your Height & Measurements?
The average High Fashion Models are between the ages of 15-22yrs old. They are a solid size 0, and are between 5’9-5’11 (Any and all exceptions to the rules will strictly be at the agents discretion). If you qualify, then do your research of Top Modeling Agencies in your city, or city near by. Keep in mind...Each Agency has, “A LOOK” that they prefer to manage. So if you do not fit their requirements, it is not a reflection on you not being qualified...it just means you will have to find a suitable agency willing to represent your look!
Most aspiring Models will qualify for Commercial Modeling. Which is typically where the fashion models go once they’ve reached a certain age. Commercial Modeling is a little more relaxed. The age range is far more vast. Their height requirements tend to be around 5’8-up, and their Weight requirements are also more relaxed. (Again, their requirements are at the agents discretion). Same rules apply when scouting out a Commercial Agency. Each agency has, “A Look” that they prefer to manage. So look at their Model board to see if your look will qualify.
As I mentioned earlier, Take professional pics! By Professional, I mean an accredited Photographer who has experience. After all, this is an investment in You! An entire portfolio is NOT necessary to begin with. An amazing Portfolio takes time. It has various photographers for it to be complete. Even then, you will be constantly upgrading your look & your book as you go.
To start... you will need three shots! Your Body shot, your 3/4 shot, & your headshot! WEAR MINIMAL MAKEUP...LESS IS BEST!!! They want to see YOUR NATURAL BEAUTY! So fake hair, false lashes, contouring, & fake nails WILL NOT be acceptable or necessary! They want to see your shape... so form fitted clothing like skinny jeans with a cami top will be fine. Be mindful to wear basic colors like Nudes, Black & Denim.
If they like you.. they will have you do Digitals, which is basically all the same thing, only shot by a Rep on the spot at the agency.
VOILÁ!!! You would then be a signed Professional Model! Still think you have what it takes?
